Paltau ("iron mountain") is a right tributary of the Chatkal, rising at the foot of the Koksu range. The Obi-Rakhmat cave in the valley was discovered in 1962; it yielded the remains of a Middle Palaeolithic child with mixed Neanderthal and Cro-Magnon features.
